The Earth's Treasures

See Mural Madness if you missed the introduction of this residency before you read on.

Here are the student illustrations for the mural, "Earth's Treasures" and their vision boards.  I think it is hilarious that the students were thinking the vision boards were going to be our mural.  They were proud of their drawings and trusted my vision, but were completely caught off guard when they saw how I interpreted their illustrations on 2'x4' wooden panels.  Pay close attention to the images you see and see if you recognize them in the mural!

The painting studio ran rather smoothly thanks to Tia Breckenridge, the school counselor.  She is an organizing guru, had the room smelling all good, made sure the students had passes to come during their scheduled workshop time, lead two after school sessions without me, was an amazing support through the whole process, and is sure to become a lifelong friend.  I got attached to these students too, I hope to work with them again soon.  It was an exhilarating experience.  Enter Mrs. D's studio:

And now it's finished!  I have so many pictures to share, I don't even know where to start.  Please watch the making of "Earth's Treasures" and enjoy the final results.  I am so proud of the students at John Hanson Montessori.  They are creative, focused, and fun!  They made me feel like a part of their family.

I wish that you could see the whole panorama in person, that you could have been to the best culminating event EVER, and met the ABSOLUTELY AMAZING students that participated and captured my heart with their AWESOME attitudes.  But, I guess you had to be there.

Here are a few pics from the amazing culminating event that really brought the John Hanson Montessori community together!  So many parents and supporters showed up including John Ceschini, the Arts Integration Officer of Prince George's County Public Schools.  We sat together and chatted about this awesome residency, upcoming projects, and our passion for arts integration. There was a sit down dinner buffet style, center pieces, and performance!  It was a true Art Gala with giveaways and cake!  The food was delicious!  And when they opened up the curtain to reveal the mural, I couldn't have been more proud.........

  4. Hi Mrs. D! This Ajani and i I wanted to say, While working with you you taught me to take a small idea and to build on it to make something bigger You also where very smart. When someone asked you a question you knew how to answer it the best way you could quickly and swiftly. You were a very positive artist as well you knew how to turn a mistake into something bigger and better. You also kept the whole group positive as well. If someone was going to something negative you said " if you had nothing nice to say don't say anything." While working with you I also realized you where Very inspired by jazz. When the jazz started flowing you always did your best work.

Thank you for adding some creativity to our school'

  5. The fun memorable experience I had was drawing my ideas freely. Also, I like when we painted. A positive memorable experience I had was when the middle school community was working together. I also enjoyed when we we're taking pictures. In addition, I enjoyed the Art Gala because the mural turned out nice and everyone looked like there we're enjoying there self.

I loved all the colors we used, I even got to create my own color. It took a while to get the right color but it was still fun to create. thank you Mrs. D for the memorable experience you gave me.

  8. The memorable moment I had with Ms. D were very fun and exciting. She taught me that I need to stay concentrated when working on any assignment, including the Community Mural. Ms. D made each student feel welcome during our Mural session. I learned that i need to stay organized when painting so the art work will remain clean. It was FUN because I could work with Ms. D and my peers when i completed this Community Mural.

  10. The experience of participating in the art mural was great! It was great because I don't take art in school anymore, so it was a chance for me to do something art related. I also enjoyed learning different tips on how to paint, work on my drawing skills, and do more to expand my artistic skills. The most memorable experience from this project was seeing the mural when it was completed. Finally, It was nice just opening up myself to something that I had never done before.

Not only did we joke and giggle, but we also learned how to paint and choose colors wisely. During my time with Mrs. D., I enjoyed taking pictures. Mrs. D. Often took pictures of us and how our work progressed each day. Mrs. D. is a very active, fun, business and funny person and I look forward to seeing her again. The mural looked AMAZING! 12. The experiences I've had with Mrs.D were that she boosted my confidence of believing that I can be a good artist. Participating in the Community Mural Project was fun mostly because I worked together with some of my fellow classmates and that brought us together as friends. I will always remember about working in the Mural Project with Mrs.D because it was fun. I also helped myself learn that I can draw a farm. Mrs.D also helped me along with other people by me working together with them.

  13. My experience working with Ms. D was something I'll never forget . The best part of the mural project was getting to paint the mural any color I wanted. Another thing I enjoyed is how Mrs. D made me feel like I had potential and I was a good artist, even though I'm not very good at painting. Mrs. D taught me that simple shapes can turn into a beautiful piece of art. I'm very glad I had this experience because it made me a better artist.

  16. My experience in the community Mural Project has affected me in a positive way. It has helped me grow as an artists and as a person. The Mural Project taught me that I am more creative than I thought. It showed me and a lot of my peers that interacting with each other is important. Painting was my biggest challenge because it is a technique that you have to follow in order for the paint to look smooth. I am very happy with the experience that Ms. D. gave me and I would recommend this to more people.

  18. For the past four weeks I have been working with Mrs.D it was fun and I learned a lot of things. Mrs.D always had me laughing and helped me when I did something wrong (which I did a lot). working with my peers was great because I got closer to a lot of people through this experience. The mural went from white lines on a black board to a colorful masterpiece about earths treasures. In the end of it all I learned to paint better and stop being so stiff and just let loose. Thanks Mrs.D.

  19. This art mural was a vey fun project, it was very useful in my Middle School experience, it taught me how to work with classmates that I don't usually work with, it showed me with just a couple ideas you can make a masterpiece by just working together. Memorable experiences that I had at the art mural was that at the end we all saw what we worked so hard on. I would like to thank Ms.D for her time and hard work she gave for our art mural project

My instructor, "Ms. D" was amazing and nice... ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL!!!!!
She taught us different styles of art, including painting drawing and more.
She helped me become a better the artist I wanted to be & will continue to become.
And helped me in my weakness in art "painting".
After this experience I feel happy, like "A New Professional Artist!"

I also noticed how fun it was to share positive, fun, learning, and memorable experiences with my friends. It was great being able to help reveal peoples hidden talents. It was also fun to see what I could do in the arts. Finally, it was memorable of how my whole school was able to work together for the finishing product to display our schools pride for education.
